Southwest Indiana - Center of the Nation's Population, Perfect Location for Your Business

While many locations might talk about their "central" location, only a few can honestly claim to be in the "Center of the Country" as defined by the US Census Bureau.

The median center, as shown below, is defined as a point where 50% of the population is north of the point and south of the point, and 50% of the population is east of the point and west of the point. According to the 2000 US census, that point is located in Southwest Indiana.

With its central location in the heart of the nation, Southwest Indiana is ideal for businesses needing to purchase or supply goods or products anywhere within the central or eastern United States.

Nearly 75% of the country’s population is within a 12-hour driving distance. St. Louis, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Nashville and Louisville can be reached by interstate highways within three hours, while Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, and Cleveland are an eight-hour drive or less.

This prime location also enables Southwest Indiana businesses to access a wide array of natural resources and agricultural products. Coal, lumber, stone, minerals, steel and grain can all be transported easily and economically on the excellent highway, rail and barge networks.

Southwest Indiana is the heart of the thriving Tri-State Area (Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois) of nearly 1 million people. It is the center of the area's industry and its entertainment. With everything from a philharmonic orchestra to professional sports, expansive shopping malls to extensive nature preserves, Southwest Indiana is an outstanding location to live and work.

The fifteen counties encompassing the Southwest Indiana Development Council’s area occupy the southwestern corner of the state and are bordered by the Ohio and Wabash rivers. The median center of US population, as determined by the US Department of the Census, is located in Southwest Indiana. The Evansville-Henderson metropolitan area, which is located in the SWIDC area, was rated as one of the "Most Logistics-Friendly Metros" in the United States in a recent edition of Expansion Management Magazine.

Auto production facilities

Due to the opening, and susequent expansion, of Toyota’s truck manufacturing facility in Southwest Indiana, more and more automotive related businesses are locating facilities in the area.
