Governor names Jim Edwards to Indiana State Board of Education

Governor Mitch Daniels today named six new members of the Indiana State Board of Education. The appointments include Jim Edwards, a business leader who is a member of the board of directors for Lincolnland Economic Development Corporation, Spencer County Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

Jim Edwards is the founder and President of Edwards and Associates, a management consulting firm located in Santa Claus, Indiana. The firm specializes in Operations Management and Workforce Training and Development. In addition to his consulting business, he is very involved in workforce development activities at the state level. Mr. Edwards has received a gubernatorial appointment to the Indiana Workforce Proficiency Panel and serves as Chairman of that panel. He was named the 2004 Volunteer of the Year by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. Jim’s involvement in workforce development led him to spearhead Project Excellence which is bringing in more than $2 million in grant dollars to help train Spencer County workers.

"There is no more important task in Indiana than improving the quality of our citizens’ education. We’ve named individuals who bring a fresh outlook to the board and are committed to helping kids reach their full potential and our schools achieve true academic excellence," said the governor.

Daniels said his charge to the board would include:

Reviewing rules and regulations with an eye toward changes that will give teachers more time to teach and principals more time to lead
Spending funds more wisely and moving more dollars to the classroom
Deepening the state’s commitment to accountability and results.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Suellen Reed chairs the Board of Education. All appointments are for four years, retroactive to July 1.
